Menteng Residence
A rigorous heritage restoration in historical Central Jakarta, harmonizing dark mahogany louvers, hand-applied lime plaster, and bespoke bronze joinery.
“Restoration is not mere nostalgia; it is the recalibration of historic character for contemporary life.”
Set along the tree-lined avenues of historic Menteng, this mid-century estate carried decades of layered colonial and tropical modernist interventions. Karsara was commissioned to strip away superfluous partitions, restoring original volumetric grandeur while introducing refined acoustic and climatic performance.
Central to the redesign is the reintroduction of operable timber louver systems crafted from Indonesian mahogany. These louvers cast rhythmic geometric shadow plays across chalky lime-plastered walls, while allowing tropical drafts to cool internal galleries continuously without relying on mechanical air conditioning.
New interventions were consciously demarcated with custom unlacquered bronze hardware, fluted acoustic glass partitions, and dark hand-poured terrazzo floor tiles. The result is a residence of solemn dignity, understated luxury, and enduring presence.
Bespoke Bronze & Mahogany
Custom bronze pivot hinges and latch plates interact with the dark mahogany grain, patinaing naturally over time to register touch and daily human ritual.
