Dharmawangsa Residence Monolithic Basalt Facade & Rain Garden

“The city demands an architecture of sanctuary — dark mineral walls holding the world at bay, making room for rain and quiet.”

Located in one of Jakarta’s most distinguished residential enclaves, Dharmawangsa Residence offers an architectural antithesis to glass-and-steel luxury. Encased in dark charcoal volcanic basalt stone slabs harvested from Mount Merapi quarries, the street facade presents an enigmatic, protective stone face to the city.

Upon crossing the heavy bronze threshold, the volume unfolds around an expansive, glass-less internal rain garden courtyard. Rainwater drops directly through double-height open airwells into sunken mossy water basins, filling the living chambers with gentle acoustic rainfall sounds.

Massive floor-to-ceiling unlacquered bronze pocket doors slide entirely into basalt wall cavities, blurring boundaries between living pavilions, dining terraces, and tropical vegetation. Every surface invites touch — hand-rubbed beeswax on aged teak, flamed basalt stone, and cool cast plaster.
